After a college hockey accident left him paralyzed from the chest down 28 years ago, Dr. Irmo Marini said he either had the choice to accept his fate or get back in the game and earn as many degrees as possible. He chose the latter. His decision to "stay in the game” as he puts it led to Marini, professor and Ph.D. coordinator for the Department of Rehabilitation, being honored with the National Council on Rehabilitation Education 2009 Distinguished Career in Rehabilitation Education Award in February.

UTPA achieves approval for new graduate program concentration

South Texas students seeking to raise their SAT scores in preparation for college applications can now participate in the SAT Prep Program being offered for the first time at The University of Texas-Pan American. The initial course for UTPA SAT Prep Program will begin July 22.

A new partnership signed June 26 between The University of Texas-Pan American and the City of McAllen to establish a UTPA McAllen Teaching Site will provide Rio Grande Valley residents more convenience and greater access to higher education.

VA education benefits updated to offer veterans more financial aid
Starting July 1, The University of Texas-Pan American and universities across the country will no longer be required to take into account veteran’s benefits when determining their eligibility for financial aid, which may result in veterans receiving more financial aid to fund their higher education endeavors.

UTPA receives $100,000 grant to support FESTIBA 2010

UTPA student leader’s “Bare Necessities Diaper Drive” benefits Valley families
Julissa Barrera learned over her years as a student at The University of Texas-Pan American that leadership requires creativity, determination and perseverance.

For her final project as a member of the four-year Student Leadership Program at the University, Barrera created, researched and implemented a drive in which she successfully collected nearly 8,000 diapers to give to clients of AVANCE Rio Grande Valley, a local nonprofit agency providing services to lower income Valley families.

More than 100 students, faculty and staff gathered at The University of Texas-Pan American on Friday, May 14 to celebrate the life of UTPA alumnus and Rio Grande Valley native Gloria Evangelina Anzaldúa, internationally recognized cultural theorist, creative writer and independent scholar.

Middle school girls learn about engineering
More than 200 female middle school students participated in a daylong educational conference May 12 to learn about the field of engineering. Summer Science Camp at UTPA accepting applications
The University of Texas-Pan American is accepting applications for the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp set for July 19-31 at the Edinburg campus.

This year’s camp titled “Fueling Great Minds for the Future” is a free academic program that provides activities, experiments, projects, and field experiences to Hidalgo County students who will be entering sixth, seventh or eighth grades in the fall of 2009.
